Lost And Found - Nesting Tables

While purging our garage the other day, I stumbled upon a set of nesting tables that I had completely forgotten about.  If I recall correctly, I had purchased them for our daughter's first apartment in her college sophomore year and she really didn't care for them.  It was not the 'design aesthetic' she was going for.  Anyhow, I was thrilled to have found them.

Coincidentally, I had recently been leafing through one of my favorite home
catalogs, Wisteria and fell in love with their Cabriole-Leg Table Set and knew I had to refinish my table set to reflect their traditional Swedish design.

If you have been following my blog, you may recall my  Homemade Chalk Paint Experiment and the resulting table shown below.  I decided to use the same technique on my nesting table set.

So, I mixed 2 tablespoons of non-sanded grout and one cup of leftover flat white ceiling paint and began to paint my tables.

Below you will find the 'before and after' with one coat of paint.

This chalk paint recipe provides even and full coverage much like Annie Sloan Chalk paint at a fraction of the cost.  After two coats of chalk paint, I lightly sanded each of the tables and generously applied my 'go-to' Howard Citrus Shield Premium Wax in Golden Oak.  So easy to apply, 'wax on, wax off'...

Now, this is where I need your help.  I'm not too sure about the final color of the tables so I repainted one with a 'grey' chalk paint that I mixed with some leftover Behr paint. I then sanded it and applied my 'go-to' wax.  Below, are my two tables with their final waxed finish.  They are positioned in between my two Craigslist Cane Chairs and will complete one of the vignettes in my spare bedroom.

Project #5 Almost Complete!

Your vote will determine how I paint the entire set, WHITE OR GREY....

Let me know what you think.....

  1. I like how the white pops, but can see how it would be a hard decision! Does your homemade chalk paint dry as fast as the original - 1 to 2 hrs?

    1. Michelle; I have never used the original ASCP but I can tell you this recipe dries within an hour but I normally leave it 2 hours before I begin to sand. Hope that helps and thx for stopping by. Heather

  8. I've used Annie Sloan paint, and love the colors but find it tooo expensive for real life. So I'll try out your recipe. I vote white, because that's what I favor. I do like the grey because it is a light shade of grey, and looks pretty. Who's that Anonymous above, whatever! Thanks for sharing you creative inspirations over at Sunday's Best.

  12. Hi there. I vote for White. I have the A.S. paint but want to do the homemade version soon on my next projects! I just need to go & buy the grout. My husband has som Sanded grout - would it make a difference if I used that?? (just wondering...)

    1. Hesta; To be honest with you, I have no idea if Sanded grout would work. All of the recipes I have seen call for Unsanded grout. I suppose if you have it handy, just give it a try. Mix up maybe 1/4 cup of paint and 1 1/2 tsp of sanded grout and see what happens. I'm all up for experimenting. Let me know if it works!!! Heather

  14. I'm partial to the grey for a French or Scandinavian flavour. You can also make chalk paint with 1 part plaster paris to 2 parts paint. ~ Maureen

  23. Hello I'm a new follower and though both look great, I'm pulled more toward the grey. : ) Thanks so much for sharing your chalk paint recipe. I have a total of 9 paint projects in my near future. I'm starting with my bed for a bedroom makeover and will be headed out to buy the grout this week. I've been considering the ASCP but as mentioned can be expensive, especially if you're doing large pieces. Where do you buy your wax? 1. Barbe, I'm heading over to your blog to see all of your project thrift finds. I bought my wax at Amazon. Here is the link - http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_2_14?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=howard+citrus+shield+premium+paste+wax&sprefix=Howard+Citrus+%2Caps%2C209
Sorry, but I don't know how to incorporate a link in a Reply. But it's priced at $9.75 and I've used it on 5 projects and still have more than half of it left. Good Luck!!! Heather
